The ancient nomads of North China were hunters, warriors, and traders who facilitated the exchange of goods, technology, ideas, and art. They were also builders of empires. Living a highly mobile life centered around hunting and herding, they left behind a remarkable artistic legacy where men and beasts, predators and prey, culture and nature are intertwined in an endless cycle of life and death. This world is vividly preserved not only in the ancient nomads’ artistic heritage but also in the profound spirituality that permeates it, expressing an ideal relationship between humans and nature—a concept that is more relevant today than ever before.
This exhibition, featuring over 250 art objects, tells the story of the nomads from their obscure beginnings in the early 1st millennium to their “golden age” between the 10th and 13th centuries. To bring these objects to life, the narrative is explored through the diverse lenses of archaeology, art history, anthropology, and the broader context of cultural exchange across Eurasia.
